Latex 101, by Stephani Clevenger
Latex can be used to create many special effects or to enhance other makeup applications. It can be used as an adhesive or stand alone. It is wide ranging but first you must know the basics.
Before you can just apply latex, what is it? Are you allergic? Is your model allergic? Will it work with the appliance you are working with? What colors does it come in and how do you know what to select?
Let’s start with the first question:
Latex comes in liquid form and can be applied in various ways. It can be an adhesive or the main staple to your makeup wardrobe. However, you must check for allergies before you even begin to work with it.
To test for allergies, use a cotton ball and apply a small spot to a place on your arm (a hairless spot---if it’s not a hairless spot, it will be after this experiment!) Wait 30 minutes and see if there are any reactions. If so remove it and wash carefully to remove all excess residues. If not, you are good to go!
Latex comes in a variety of shades from white to red to tan to dark brown. Certain vendors may have other shades but these are basic. Decide what type of character you are going for and plan accordingly. It only helps to have darker latex if the look you are going for is dark and likewise, a lighter one if it’s a light effect.
Decide what characteristics you want to have and where you can apply latex. If it’s something that you don’t want to mess up the clothing (of course we do but in that rare case you don’t…) make sure you have a towel or other cloth draped around parts you don’t want exposed.
Now your model is ready…. What do you apply it with you may ask?
Fingers!!! Muahahahahaha! Or if you want to be politically correct, put on gloves and use a sponge or brush dedicated for that one use only. We don’t want to spread germs now do we?? Work in layers and let them mostly dry between. The thicker you apply it, the easier it is to take off later! Trust me, after many years as Krispy Queen, I know this from deep personal experience! Most importantly, practice practice practice! And when you have time, practice some more. Application of latex to those who have never tried can be tricky.
