This is a bag of industrial grade gelatin from FX Warehouse used for making wounds and makeup effects. |
Here is some red and blue food coloring. We add to one cup of water a tea spoon of red and 5 to 10 drops of blue for desired blood effect. |
Some additives you can use to extend the life of the gelatin if you are wearing it for FX makeup or Theatre. Sorbitol is used in industrial grade gelatin to increase it's strength and to help keep it from shrinking. Glycerin is used in gelatin formula's and helps soften the skin. Makes great sweat and tears for movie close-up shoots. |
For a medium amount of gelatin formula that provides a significant amount of gelatin. Take a cereal bowl and add 1 cup of water and microwave it until hot, not boiling. I must caution anyone working with this material to use extreme caution and make sure the gelatin material and or water that has been microwaved has cooled down to the touch before appling to anyone! This stuff (after it has been nuked) appears to be like molten lava and therefore deserves extreme caution when using on the skin. After nuking the 1 cup of water add 3 teaspoons full of industrial grade gelatin. Stir until completely blended together. |
Add 1 teaspoon of red food coloring and 10 drops of blue or green food coloring and mix. If your coloring is still a pinkish color add more blue or green until you get the desired blood color that you want. You can also use just yellow or green food coloring for puss or snot. The great thing about gelatin is when it is dry, it still appears to be wet. Looks gross. |

Mixure ready to use for wounds. |
Take a piece of tissue or kleenex and tear into strips for the skinned look. |
Apply a base to the area being used for the wound or you can use makeup or airbrushing for brusing before appling this part. |
Dip your tissue in the gelitan when it has cooled way down to almost room temperature. |
Here is just a quick application of tissue dipped into the colored gelatin to make it look like skin that has been ripped away. With added makeup and drying this would work great for injury simulation or the start of a zombie's hand. |
Here are the cut wrists look I use for my Lizzie character. This works great appied on top of latex with makeup added and will last for an actor performing at a haunted attraction for the evening with very little if any touch up. |
Puncture wound effect. |
It's amazing what you can come up with just adding some rice krispies. This mixture added to your head gives a great look of spilled brains. My Grandpa character uses this look alot. |
If you have some left overs just put a piece of plastic over top of the bowl. Or after a half hour or so pull the bowl out of the refigerator and scoop out the contents of the bowl and put it in a zip lock bag. This mixure will stay good for weeks. Just reheat it in the microwave and you're ready to apply again. Just make sure it cools to the touch before applying.
